Only days after being crowned Miss Nevada International 2012, Kari Anderson, a former victim of bullies shares her triumphs with youth at a nearby mall during the ‘Runway for a Cause’ Event. Organized by a Nevada non-profit organization National All American Elite Society, the event, featured young girls and boys, from toddlers to teenagers, with cash prizes to be donated, in part, to a charity of the contestant’s choice. Anderson, who joined the judging panel, was amazing at how confident and charismatic the youngsters were on the runway.

As her first of many events to support her community, Anderson was most surprised by her new celebrity during the day. The Beauty was even more pleased when a young mother expressed how other girls pick on her daughter about competing in pageants, giving Anderson great opportunity to share her Cause Campaign against Bullies.

“It’s weird seeing a Beauty Queen out around real people and helping kids”, says New Pageant Fan Javier, who only came to the Primm Mall by chance.

Other passers-by stopped to tune in as Kari explained to a teenage brother and sister about pushing through the taunts at school. Their mother seemed very excited to meet the newly crowned Beauty Queen, “The timing could not have been better”, she claims, as she explains to Anderson the obstacles her daughter has come across in school by other students.

Acknowledging the fact that there may come when we all become stuck due to old scares created by bullies, Kari shares how she gets unstuck and pushes on. “There are times when I second guess or bully myself, but whether it’s a good friend or a good workout that gets me moving again the goal is to always keep going.” states Anderson, “There were people, like your mother, here, that believe you can do anything….”

Although the competition is open to both girls and boys, NAAE director Melanie Thompson believes that it can send a positive message to young girls in particular.

“NAAE’s message is one that is built on the concept that the things that really matter are not our physical looks, or our level of popularity at school or how much we are in demand on our social calendars,” said Thompson.

According to statistics, 1 out of every 10 students who drops out of school does so because of repeated bullying. One in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. While children get minimal education on bulling in schools, they are inundated with bullying tactics and techniques in politics.

As a Registered Respiratory Therapist and Fitness Guru, Kari has personal but also a professional view on the human condition. ”I believe there is a peaceful consequence to the bulling.” says Miss Nevada International 2012, “If adults were more aggressive on physical activity for kids, they may see less aggression in the kids. I think we should have a burpees competition.”

“Do what you LOVE and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

When you are young athlete just playing the game may be enough but there is still a part of you that wants to win, just once. Some athletes will do anything to achieve that big win, even cheat.

Having a real love for the game and everything about it is what gets most professional athletes through the game even through the pain. The monotony of routine drills may be enough to get the team on the same page, but the real pros will drive their bodies to the limit for the thrill of the win. Or could it be something more?

Ultimate fighters, Football Players, Race Car Drivers and even Figure Skaters make what we enjoy to spectate, look effortless. They build the strength and endurance to do what they love; to do what makes them feel like they are flying. Pushing a fine tuned machine to the limit takes a master mind of body mechanics.

Those of us who watch our favorite players in awe may think that going to the gym on a regular basis to get screamed at by our professional trainers is real commitment. But when your family, livelihood, source of income and even medical coverage depend on your every act you need REAL training. Enter the Institute of Sport Science & Athletic Conditioning, founded and run by USAW Sports Performance Coach, Michael S. Palmieri.

As a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), Michael has an unsurpassed knowledge about building a stronger and better competitive structure. But calling this paragon of power a run-of-the-mill personal trainer is like calling an experienced Sous Chef …….Bobby Flay, Guy Fieri or Alton Brown. You just don’t do it! Although, Alton Brown is more of a scientist than a chef; but maybe that’s what you need to be to get to the core of a structure, proving my point. You have to understand the science as well as the mechanics behind the bodies you are building into masterpieces.

Imagine having the A+ team giving you the tools need to get your body in the most powerful condition humanly possible, and excelling beyond expectations, while hitting every goal. Depending on your sport specific needs your A+ team could consist of a Nutritional Specialist (that will groom a meal plan specific for your athletic needs), a Conditioning Specialist (that helps you build a stronger core preventing injury) and a Speed and Power Specialist (that will give you that competitive thrust); all lead by an expert in kinesiology and performance testing.

With a Masters in Biomechanics, Michael Palmieri and his team lead the field in conditioning for Heavy Sports, Combat Sports, Speed/Power, and Physique training. As one of the top strength coaches and sports science researchers in the industry, Palmieri (having personal and professional experience as an athlete and power lifter that has dominated his sport and his craft); offers his clients and team the full spectrum of his knowledge giving him a more powerful edge when connecting with his clients; helping them excel at any challenge and DOMINATE their GAME.

Having a true servants heart, Deborah Ashton-Cooke, Mrs. Nevada International 2012, gives consistently to no end. As a wife, mother, business owner and board member to several charities it’s difficult to understand how this marvelous maven has the time to do so much for her community.

A proud supporter of the St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the American Heart Association, Cooke, often makes time to motivate and coach her pageant sisters and pageant delegates to notable successes; all while making time for herself to exercise and recharge.

Don’t let the soft smile fool you this amazing angel of a woman runs her own business with a stern hand. Strong women may be built but they are also born. While promoting her business (Promotions and Events Management, Inc., (PEM), this beautiful brunette promotes health through fitness, nutrition and well deserved down time.

As a coach and mentor, Deborah, gives it to you straight, in regards to what to expect during the pageant and judging process.

“I don’t know how she does it, she is amazing” states claims one of her many admirers.

As one of Nevada’s biggest assets, Deborah, represents all of the amazing women in Nevada that want to do more for their community. She recently walked for the “Heart of a Child in Mind” with her very good friend and student pageant delegate Francine Sanchez at the Children’s Heart Walk. Children seemed in awe of Cooke’s crown and as they asked to get photos with her. “Look, Mommy a Princess!” says one child passing her in the Fashion Show Mall- Las Vegas, were the annual walk was hosted.

The epitome of Beauty, Brains and Balance this Bold Beauty Queen will be heading to Nationals in July, where she will be competing with Married Women from all over the United States to show what REAL Women are made of.

It’s said that your relationship can survive anything if you weather problems that affect your money, home and other people, as a team. So, it’s pretty much safe to say that the main source of this unity is communication. But is it that simple?

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the divorce rate compared to the marriage rate in America is just over 50 percent, meaning every other marriage will end in separation or divorce prematurely. It can be avoided. Many of the behaviors and habits we take into our relationships are taught by what we see and hear around us or learned from past experiences.

We interviewed happy couples (Single, Married and yes, Divorced) about what keeps them in a strong, loving and supportive relationship. You may find that a little extra effort and patience can move you through the hardest of times together. There are so many things to consider when communicating with someone you care about. And there are many forms of Communication.

Don’t worry. Before you finish this article you will find the simplicity in what we are offering here and realize that it didn’t hurt one bit.

The good thing is you don’t have to figure out other people. Starting this process starts with you. Most Single People just want to feel connected. The most important thing for a single person to do before making a love connection is to be comfortable being alone. If you can find harmony in the quiet time (alone) or enjoy dancing with yourself others will too. Think about it. Have you ever replayed a joke in your head or laughed at a funny card while standing in the grocery store and moments later a total stranger starts a conversation with you out of the blue. When you had that happy moment, even though it was private, your face, posture and energy changed and you didn’t even notice. But someone else did. Just try it. Smile at a stranger like you know something they don’t.

Being single can be fun when you are investing time in a relationship with yourself first.

Those who are Married have a bit more to review. Marriage can be fun, if you can get there. I have witnessed couples who are normally so loving to one another get into arguments all the way up to the wedding day about family, money, and sadly, the actual wedding arrangements. If you know who you are as a unit nothing will break your stride through life or down the aisle.

Here is where most of us lose it and end up attacking each other instead of the situation. First things first, if you have not set your family members and friends straight about your relationship with your sweetie or what you want, as a couple, you have already lost the fight.

There is no point in being in a relationship with a person that allows their family to berate you, or treat you with disrespect. It may seem silly to have to put your foot down with those you have known the longest but sometimes you have to. If you are an adult you can express your love and respect for your family and friends while telling them to kindly butt out. *Also, it is VERY important that you are not contributing to this abuse.

Guys: Are you going home to Mom and telling her about what your lady said or did that made you mad??? Ladies: Are you having coffee or shopping with your girlfriends while complaining about your man’s short comings??

Stop it!!!

The ONLY time you should share an issue regarding your sweetie is when it is already resolved or you really want help solving it. Like dominos, those who love you will fall in line with your pity party and drag in their own issues to boot. Before you know it you are angrier than when you first began complaining and you will end up taking that nasty attitude home that could start an unnecessary fight over nothing.

If you plan to spend your life together you have to work as a team to establish boundaries, agreements and quality time. The reservations of family of friends should be laid to rest if you are happy. And all of this should be practiced and maintained especially when you have children. When baby or babies come along you are a united front for them and yourselves. Your children will learn how they should treat others at home first.

“My husband and I always hug or kiss in front of the kids.” claims Cynthia, mother of two. “When we realized that both of our parents never even held hands in public we understood why we learned how to be affectionate so late in life.”

Everyone wants to feel connection, security, appreciation and adoration. If your relationship does not provide at least 3 out of 4 of these needs you should really re-evaluate your situation. And talk to each other about what is going on. Many couples end up separating when they lose touch with who they are as a couple. You should always have a sense of autonomy in your relationships; but your greatest strength comes from who you are even if you are a self-help junkie. Trying to grow as a person or improving who you are can only make you stronger together if you are practicing being together.

If you Separated or considering it and you really want to be together then use that time away from each other to remember why you fell in love with this person you suddenly cannot stand to be with. DO NOT waste time thinking about what they did or listing off all the things that went wrong. Instead, focus on all of the things that are and have gone right.

When one-time lovers forget what it is to be a lover because they have busy schedules transforming them into two ships in the night many people will sway in the direction they feel most connected instead of reaching out to the one they promised to love, honor and cherish. Love is easy. I know what the songs say….’All you Need is Love’, Dah-Dah-Dah–Da- Da! Um, no.

Love is just the foundation. On that foundation there is so much more that can be built. But let’s go back to your promise at the altar, if you have gotten that far. (Love – Honor – Cherish)

*Honor defined as; honesty, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs and actions: a man or woman of honor.

*Cherish defined as; to hold or treat as dear, to care for tenderly; nurture

There is no honor in keeping your true feeling to yourself. But if you do and that is your coping mechanism make an effort to change if want a happy home. The definition of Honor says it all. Be honest with your lover. It’s unfair to those who are unaware of what is going on in the relationship. Maintain your integrity, do what you are going to say that you are going to do and give them a chance to as well. Sometimes we are so quick to point the finger that our actions or reactions may be hurtful. You will not be heard if you are constantly pointing out the bad. What aren’t YOU doing? You can’t nurture each other when you provoke instead of promote.

Maybe you are allowing the little things to distract you from truly engaging in the blessings you already have.

If you have already made the choice to Separate or Divorce keep it clean. DO NOT, continuously talk about how bad your last relationship was, especially with Children. I’m not saying you have to be buddies, you have already decided to kick that to the curb. But if you are bad mouthing your past partner to the next partner or anyone else you are sending that nastiness out. I guarantee that the next person you make a love connection with does not want to one-up your last love by hearing about all the horrible things they did. Think about it. If you are still investing time in past relationships long enough to evaluate and trash it, you are still in that relationship. If you have decided that you are better off apart; love them and let them go.

“The day I regretted my divorce was when my husband dropped off our kids after a 3 day weekend and I listened to the kids tell me about all the things they did. They were all of the things I wanted to do as a family but we never actually talked about it. All me and my ex-husband did was fight about his work and family. We wasted so much time complaining that we could have spent planning. We communicate better now than we ever did. And I sometimes wonder what things would be like if we learned how to get along sooner”-Anonymous

If there are children, highlight the good; ALWAYS.

Your thoughts and actions are ripples in still water that spread to everything and everyone as they move outward.

Love, Honor and Cherish yourself before you commit to others, bringing them into the fold of your life. Set boundaries and maintain them if they work, if not COMMUNICATE. Really talk about your stuff. And listen without an agenda so that you can truly hear what is being said.

As an Athlete and Motivational Speaker, Vernon Lee Fox III, has fully optimized his education in Sociology.

While experiencing true victories of his faith as a Professional Football Player this inspirational leader was amongst the first of many players to be found on the football field, kneeling and giving thanks after a solid play.

Leading by example at City of Refuge-Church of God and Christ, Minister Vernon Fox makes and meets his goals with his integrity intact; something he encourages with everyone he works with including the kids he coaches in his football program.

The ‘Victory by Faith Football Program’ is a camp retreat and summer event where kids train and learn football basics; while learning to respect their teammates and themselves. “Sometimes all kids need is a little direction and guidance”, claims Fox, as he recalls his experience with mentoring to youth in his community.

No stranger to the sharp taunts of bullies and critics, Fox, motivates his protégés to use their blinders and look past the drama and chaos to the task at hand, while maintaining focus on the endgame. “I always have a plan and vision for my goals” says Fox. Regardless of the obstacles anyone can stay on point and get the job done.

“A change in perspective, behavior, or response can do so much more to help us move past issues left unresolved.”

A graduate from Cimarron-Memorial HS in Las Vegas, NV and Fresno State University, Fox admits that he originally would not have chosen the defensive spot on the team he was given in high school, a position that got him noticed as a valuable player. After refocusing his thoughts and viewing this shocking shift on the team as an opportunity, Vernon retrained his thinking process around just getting the job he was given done with optimum outcome; which lead him to his success as a defensive player in the NFL.

San Diego Chargers (2002-2003)
Detroit Lions (2004-2005)
Washington Redskins (2006-2007)
Denver Broncos (2008-2009)

“A career can coexist with the development of the soul when we approach each with balance and determination.”
Holding on to this new way of thinking and setting goals for every challenge he faced, along with the support of his family, friends and church, Vernon was able to successfully move through the NFL worry and injury free. Grateful for his most treasured roles as Father and Husband, Vernon looks forward to every opportunity to share his tools of success with others on a Corporate, Community, Youth and Faith-Based levels.

With almost 10 years on the field, Fox learned not only a lot about the game but mostly importantly how to maintain his high achievements, health and mental acuity.

Recognized as a ‘National Scholar Athlete’ and awarded with many academic and athletic achievements, the innovative mind of this mentoring mogul is always on creative mode. Developing his own career and success plan serendipitously lead Fox to build his Corporate Leadership Program, a coaching camp for the Fortune 500 and a way for Companies to build a better team structure.

In his program, Fox provides strategic training modules for large corporations or small businesses to expose all of their employees to the successful growth techniques he has mastered. Staff will learn how to be Leaders, Make things Happen and how to make the best of every Opportunity.

The compliments and rave reviews made by the many coaches and teammates Vernon has worked and traveled with are just a shining example of the type of Man he is. As an Inspirational Leader that offers lessons in growth, teamwork and productive goal setting, Vernon Fox shares the many gifts and blessings he made the best of while promoting individual responsibility and self-respect.

“When we learn to attune ourselves to our own inner compass we follow a map that only we can see; our own path.

“I think every generation is destined to complain how the younger generation’s music sucks.”

As I arrive at thirty years-old, I realized that I’ve become just like my mother. Thirty is such an interesting age whereas I’m not so unattached from my “younger” brethren (and “sistren”) that I can see the games that twenty year-olds try to get away with a little easier than someone ten years my senior. But the reason I’ve become like my mother is that I find myself complaining about the younger generation’s pop stars and how inartistic and raunchy they’ve become. I think every generation is destined to complain how the younger generation’s music sucks. And as I turn my grey-haired-filled nose up at the musical styling’s of today’s artists, I firmly believe that the golden age of hip-hop took place during my teenage years in the mid-to-late 90’s. Yeeeeeep… the good ol’ days.

Watching music videos now and witnessing young celebrities flaunt their sexuality all over numerous media websites, I’m disgusted by the prospect of trying to find decent role models for children to look up to in a cesspool of Hollywood riff raff I deem unfit to deserve the praise of our youngins’. Where are the role models that I’m comfortable with leading our young people? Is it that role models are few and far between or am I looking at Hollywood through half-empty sunglasses?

But you know what I realized? It’s not that we as older (relatively) adults think that our celebrities were classier, more talented artists. It’s that our parental and socially responsible instincts kick in as we age, thus we target those celebrities who currently have a Peter Piper-esque appeal that influences our youth.

Ask yourself this: Was Britney Spears ten years ago more fitting a role model than today’s Nicki Minaj? Was Madonna more fitting a role model for our current forty-somethings who idolized her in the 80’s than Britney was for the current thirty year-olds who looked up to her ten years ago? Our celebrities have always been too controversial and lacked quality taste in their respected art according previous generations. As tame as we believe the antics of an Elvis Presley are in 2012, when he was all the rage in the 50’s and 60’s, parents were outraged by his gyrating hips and ruffian image. But if Presley portrayed the same image today, it would be equated to edginess of a Jonas brother.

Our role models are where they’ve always been… all over the world. Expecting for others to look up to who we see fit isn’t the point. Generations of children have always admired the “cool kids” on television, but as they grow and mature, those role models have changed. Out of respect for the less-than stellar celebrities I looked up to when I was a teen (or perhaps embarrassment), I won’t name names, but because I had other influences outside of TV and radio, I, like most growing adults, began to mature. So if you’re concerned about the potential celebrity role models, much like they gave up their imaginary friends 10 years previously, expect for them to grow out of it eventually. – Brjden Crewe

And for the record, the half-empty sunglasses were purposely a mash-up of optimistic metaphors.

Amidst the glittering lights of Las Vegas,

travelers often overlook the quiet beauty that surrounds them on The Strip. Once the neon veil is removed, the cultural gems – breathtaking design, personalized wine selections, music played for Presidents, world-class public art and elegant botanical gardens – are wonderfully revealed.

Design

While many visit miX at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay for chef Alain Ducasse’s culinary creations, it is obvious upon entering the restaurant that its design is, in itself, a piece of art. Located 64 stories above The Strip, the centerpiece of the restaurant is a custom-designed, 24-foot chandelier made of 15,000 hand-blown Murano glass spheres. Osteria del Circo at Bellagio is another option for diners who enjoy dining in a wonder of interior design as they embark on an epicurean adventure through Tuscan cuisine. To create the feel of a fanciful circus tavern while maintaining a sophisticated dining atmosphere, designer Adam Tihany brought the Big Top décor from the Maccioni family’s New York flagship restaurant to Las Vegas.

Wine Culture

With a record number of sommeliers and restaurants recognized by Wine Spectator, travelers can indulge their taste for the finer things in Las Vegas. Wine connoisseurs can receive personal recommendations from Bellagio’s team of 17 sommeliers including a record three Master Sommeliers. Honored with 11 Wine Spectator Awards in 2011, MGM Grand’s vast cellars and seasoned staff help every guest select the ideal wine to complement their meal. On the lighter side, marvel at the acrobatics of the wine angels at Aureole at Mandalay Bay as they retrieve wine from a four-story wine tower.

For the ultimate experience, wine and art enthusiasts will be delighted with the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art’s Art & Wine event. With wine personally chosen from Bellagio’s cellar by Director of Wine and Master Sommelier Jason Smith, connoisseurs can explore the many commonalities of wine – subjective, emotional and personal – while taking in an expertly curated art exhibition. Beginning February 18, guests will be able to experience “Claude Monet: Impressions of Light” – a landmark exhibition featuring works that illustrate the height of Claude Monet’s engagement with color and light.

Music

Vegas isn’t all pulsating nightlife. If guests prefer classical music, they may enjoy Bellagio’s Petrossian Bar. Situated in front of Dale Chihuly’s 2,100-square-foot glass flower sculpture, travelers can sit back and marvel at this renowned piece of art as David Osborne, known as the “Pianist to the Presidents” for his performances for the Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Obama administrations, weaves graceful melodies on the Steinway Grand.

Public Art

Travelers will find some of The Strip’s best public art at CityCenter, home to one of the largest and most ambitious corporate art programs in the world. Walking into the ARIA lobby, wandering eyes find New York-based artist Maya Lin’s work “Silver River,” an approximately 120-foot silver cast of the Colorado River suspended above the reception area. Lin used reclaimed silver to develop the creation in light of Nevada’s standing as the “Silver State,” while maintaining CityCenter’s commitment to sustainability. Take a walking tour to continue the journey into the unparalleled art collection and discover works by Jenny Holzer, Nancy Rubins, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Frank Stella, Henry Moore and Richard Long, among others.

Horticulture as Art

Breathe in the fresh air at Bellagio’s Conservatory and Botanical Garden and admire the thousands of trees and flowers specially lit and showcased in a theatrical presentation. Depending on the season, guests can walk on bridges and through gazebos for a close look at the magnificent botanicals while taking in the wonderful fragrance of the season.

If interested in learning more about the cultural offerings in Las Vegas, please let me know how I can be of assistance with information, photos or setting up interviews. Or, let me know if you have upcoming plans to cover Las Vegas and it would be my pleasure to assist in whatever way possible.
